KANSAS CITY, Mo. —

Three people were displaced from their homes after a fire Tuesday morning at an apartment complex at St. John Avenue and Indiana Avenue in northeast Kansas City.

Around 8:40 a.m., Kansas City firefighters arrived at the three-story building to find it in flames. Crews began pouring water onto the structure and attempted to use a hydrant in front of the building. Advertisement

Broadcastify audio captured the exchange between dispatchers and the fire commander:

“Dispatch this is command. Go ahead command. Can you spot me a second plug? Our plug on Indiana is dead.”

The backup hydrant across the street worked, allowing crews to run multiple lines within minutes, said KCFD Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins.

Command also ordered a third pumper truck to help.
