ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The families of two victims in last September’s mass shooting at Apalachee High School have filed notices to sue the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the Barrow County School System, and the online chat platform Discord.
In filings acquired by Atlanta News First, the family of Mason Schermerhorn, a student killed in the shooting, are seeking up to $25 million in damages should the case be settled.
The family of Taylor Jones, a student who was injured in the shooting, is seeking up to $15 million.
“If I could write the word ‘priceless’ on that ante item notice, that would be my demand. You can’t put a value on it [a person’s life],” said Mike Puglise, the attorney representing both families.
Puglise said Georgia law requires a dollar amount be notated
