HMRC has been handed new powers to raid taxpayers’ bank accounts directly. Labour Party Chancellor Rachel Reeves has approved plans to reintroduce the ‘direct recovery powers’ ahead of her Autumn Budget.

HMRC staff can claim money directly from the accounts of debtors who owe more than £1,000 under “direct recovery powers”, which were first introduced in 2015 but paused during the Covd pandemic.

HMRC said on Monday it had reintroduced the strategy in a “test and learn” phase after being given the powers to do so by Ms Reeves. Mike Warburton, The Telegraph’s tax expert, said: “I am very concerned about this development.
