SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - This week, someone claimed half of that historic $1.78 billion Powerball Jackpot.

The winning ticket was sold at a gas station in St. Louis.

Scammers know all of this. They’re creating fake winner accounts on Facebook, saying they’re giving money away.

“Julie Leach” won the lottery and messaged Ashley Reynolds on Facebook. She said she has a giveaway program and wanted to give her $150,000. A quick Google search shows she won millions years ago.

“Scammers can create pretty convincing profiles and social media ads. They do that all the time,” said Pamela Hernandez with the Better Business Bureau.

Especially now, striking when the iron is hot. Reynolds was told she must pay the $300 delivery fee.
