“We got closer. I was like, ‘Wow,’” said Liberty County resident Dan Scott, recounting his last trip to the Fort Morris Historic Site.
Mr. Scott called into our newsroom the other day. He says he frequently walks his dog through Fort Morris because of the beautiful scenery, but he wasn’t prepared for what he saw last Tuesday.
“Between 25 and 30 majestic oaks that were gone completely, severed at ground level, about 18 inches high, and gone,” said Scott. “I got sick. I’ll go ahead and say, I got sick, like most historians probably would.”
Bare stumps are all that’s left—dozens of them. We flew our WTOC drone at the site to give you a bird’s eye view of just how many there are.
