Instagram will use AI to identify Australian teens who try and lie about their age to get access to an adult account.

It comes as social media platforms are on a deadline to get children under 16 off their platforms by December 10.

The identification tools will be operational from Monday and follows the successful rollout of the technology in US markets, which placed under-18s caught by the AI function into a Teen Account.

Meta said that since the overseas rollout in April, nine out of 10 accounts have remained under the setting, which prevents users from live-streaming video, restricts messages from accounts they follow, blurs nudity and limits sensitive content.
