LUDLOW, Mass. —
The State Fire Marshal's Office says a lithium-ion battery from an electric scooter was the cause of a large fire at a Ludlow home on Tuesday afternoon.
According to investigators, the battery was failing to charge, and the homeowner used an aftermarket charger.
The charger then exploded in the kitchen.
"It’s vitally important that we purchase, charge, and recycle these batteries safely to prevent incidents like this one," Ludlow Fire Chief Ryan Pease said.
The blaze broke out just before 4 p.m. at 56 Haviland St. There were no reports of any injuries, but flames could be seen shooting from the windows, causing significant property damage.
Firefighters extinguished the flames within 15 minutes.
