WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - A Wichita pool has officially been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Charles F. McAfee Pool located at 1240 E. 14th St. was nominated to the National Register for its experimental materials, innovative design, and significance within Wichita’s African American community.
Located at McAdams park, the pool was built in 1969 as the first in Kansas specifically designed for African American children. In 2021, it was renamed after the Wichita resident who designed the pool, Charles McAfee.
McAfee was one of the first African American graduates of the architecture program at the University of Nebraska. He was also one of the founding members of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA).
