PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — While recognizing Vienna’s “100-year head start,” Portland officials have reported on what they learned during their study trip to the Austrian capital.

Councilors Candace Avalos, Jamie Dunphy and Mitch Green presented their findings as part of Tuesday’s Homelessness and Housing Committee meeting, weeks after the three embarked on the trip to attend a junket centered on “social housing.” Portland City Council unanimously approved a resolution that directed leaders to pursue the housing model in April.

Under this model, housing is both owned and managed by the public or nonprofit groups that are focused on affordability and accessibility. Councilor Avalos noted that it has long been utilized in Vienna, which is considered as one of the most livable cities worldwide
