A Detroit man suspected of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old child in Eastpointe and possibly others is being held in custody in New York state, police said Wednesday.

According to Eastpointe police, the alleged victim reported she had been sexually assaulted by an unknown suspect on Sept. 22.

A short time later, the department’s detective bureau and special investigations unit were able to identify the perpetrator, said Detective Lt. Alexander Holish.

“A search warrant was conducted but the suspect already fled the scene,” Holish said in a news release.

During the search warrant execution, investigators uncovered “several pieces” of evidence that suggest there were possibly other victims in the past. Police did not state what the evidence was.
