BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) -- This week is Child Passenger Safety week, ensuring all children are safe when riding in the car.
About one-third of all children, 12 and under, who die in a car collision were not in a safety seat. On top of that, 46% of people who install car seats do so incorrectly, putting the child at risk.
"The number one mistake is just not using one at all. We want to make sure if they should be in a car seat, they're in one," said Jenny Neil, a child passenger safety technician for the McLean County Health Department.
"Otherwise, it can be all sorts of things, like using the wrong car seat, being in the front seat before we're ready for it or being rear facing not long enough and potentially using an expired seat."
