DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. (WKRG) — The Alabama Department of Transportation will be starting construction on the Dauphin Island Bridge on Sept. 30th.

ALDOT said drivers should expect delays for the next three to four years while the 43-year-old bridge gets an “underwater” makeover.

“Most of the work is being done underneath the bridge,” James Gordon, an ALDOT spokesperson, said.

Repairs will include fixing the concrete beneath the seven-mile bridge, which has sat in saltwater since 1982.

Even though most of the construction will not be visible on top, drivers will still face partial lane closures when commuting to and from the island.

“The bridge will never be closed,” Gordon said. “It’ll be in sections as needed, when needed. Not every day.”
