YORK, Pa. (WHTM) -- A proposed citywide surveillance system is closer to reality in York.

York City Council considered a resolution Wednesday granting York SafeNet permission to use city owned poles and right of ways for a network of 140 surveillance cameras. The newly formed nonprofit requested the access so it could raise funds for the $4.5 million project, for which it aims not to use taxpayer monies.

The council voted 5-1 to place the resolution on its Oct. 7 legislative agenda.

Interest in the surveillance program started in 2021 with the YorkSafeNet feasibility study, which Eric Menzer, chair for YorkSafe Net, said concluded the city had a worse gun problem than peer cities.
