PORTLAND, Oregon — After a deadly shooting at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas , debate has sparked over whether heated political rhetoric is fueling violence.
Some point to threats against ICE officers in Portland, while others say the real harm lies in how undocumented immigrants are detained and separated from their families.
On Wednesday, Joshua Johnson, the field office director for ICE in Dallas, said he believes inflammatory language online was responsible for the attacks.
"The takeaway from all of this is that the rhetoric has to stop," Johnson said. "There are people out there who are seeing what is being placed online, and they're coming and they're doing acts of violence against ICE employees."
