PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A person in their 60s from Providence County has tested positive for West Nile virus, marking the state's first probable human case of the mosquito-borne disease this year.

The case will be confirmed through further testing by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The R.I. Department of Health said the person started showing symptoms in early September and remained hospitalized as of Thursday.

The virus was detected in a mosquito sample collected in Providence on Sept. 9, but the Health Department said the last round of testing on Sept. 15 showed no signs of West Nile or EEE.
