LYNDHURST, Ohio -- Kayla came into our lives at age 11 when we adopted a senior dog for two senior folks.

It was a mutual attraction immediately. She was a sweet, gentle soul who helped us through a stressful time as we moved from a home we had lived in for 50 years to a different home and neighborhood.

She was also very protective of us. If we sneezed or coughed, she would come over to us as if to ask, “Are you OK?”

She soon realized the usual schedule for taking a walk and would remind us enthusiastically at that time.

She was very patient. If she wanted in from the yard, she would just stand and wait at the door until someone noticed her to let her in.

She didn’t bark or scratch the door -- she would just wait.

She liked to spend a lot of time outside, even in the snow.
