A 73-year-old Sikh woman, Harjit Kaur, was deported to India this week after spending more than three decades in the United States, her lawyer Deepak Ahluwalia confirmed. According to Ahluwalia, Kaur was taken into custody on September 8 after what she believed would be a routine check-in at the San Francisco office of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Instead, she was arrested and moved between detention centers in Fresno and Bakersfield, where her family said she had irregular access to prescribed medication for diabetes and high blood pressure.

Her attorney stated that Kaur was abruptly transferred from Bakersfield to Los Angeles on Sunday night, then flown to Georgia, and subsequently placed on a chartered flight to New Delhi.
