The Rhode Island State Police are investigating after a RIPTA bus carrying passengers crashed, then rolled over, on the Claiborne Pell Bridge on Thursday, Sept. 25.

The bus driver and two passengers were injured in the crash, which happened around 12:20 p.m. on Rt. 138 West at the foot of the Jamestown side of the bridge.

The westbound right lane on the bridge was closed for several hours as emergency personnel responded, with the crash being cleared at around 2:45 p.m.

What happened in the accident?

According to a news release from the Rhode Island State Police, the bus driver appeared to lose control of the bus at it approached the end of the bridge. The left side of the bus struck the guardrail, causing the bus to cross into the other westbound travel lanes
