A Niagara judge implored a 24-year-old Perth County man to take care of people “who need protection” after sentencing him to a year in jail for his role in the gang rape of a woman in her own apartment.
“The momentum of the group’s activity took over, but you have to be held responsible for what is an awful assault — and while you weren’t the one committing the horrible acts, maybe that person doesn’t do it if they aren’t surrounded by a group just sitting by,” Justice Deborah Calderwood told Kieran Ennis, who is from Atwood, a small town about a half-hour north of Stratford.
“As hard as it may be, the only thing you can do in that circumstance is speak up and say it isn’t right and has to stop. You call the police, and you protect vulnerable people.”
