KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — TNAchieves started in Knoxville as Knox Achieves 17 years ago. The nonprofit is the foundation of the Tennessee Promise program, offering tuition-free education for high school seniors heading to community and technical schools.

It's built on a network of volunteers helping students earn the scholarships.

"Our volunteer mentors work to help students transition successfully from high school to college," Chief Community Officer Graham Thomas said. "Now we've got a second volunteer mentoring program that is helping students that are approaching graduation connect to the workforce. We help them navigate their first job and career."

TNAchieves said more than 53,000 students have benefited from the program, and half of those students are from rural counties.
