PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - A 42-year-old man was charged with stealing mail from apartment complexes across the westside of Portland on Tuesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced on Thursday.
According to court documents, Michael John Peters is accused of using counterfeit or modified postal keys to break into mailboxes at apartment and condominium complexes at least 12 times between May and September.
On Tuesday, U.S. Postal Inspectors executed a federal search warrant at an apartment in the Pearl District that Peters allegedly rented with a stolen identity.
In the apartment, investigators said they found about 300 pieces of U.S. mail that were not addressed to Peters, along with allegedly false identification documents, stolen identity documents, and counterfeit checks.
