SOUTHWEST Airlines has enforced a new security policy to prevent fire hazards.

From now on, customers will have to follow the new guidelines before boarding.

Passengers have been warned of dangers of lithium-powered batteries on planes.

Travellers have been urged to remove them from mobility devices due to fire hazards.

Customers are asked to carry lithium batteries with them into the cabin before their wheelchair is checked.

However, these batteries will not be counted against your carry-on baggage.

"Lithium batteries have become one of the most common sources of smoke and fire incidents on aircraft,” Southwest said in a note to employees, according to Reuters.
