COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Atlantic hurricane season has shifted into higher gear, with Hurricane Humberto now churning in the central Atlantic and another system, likely to become Tropical Storm Imelda, developing near the Bahamas. While Humberto poses little direct threat to the United States, Imelda could bring greater risks to parts of the Southeast and the Bahamas in the coming days.

Humberto officially became the third hurricane of the 2025 season early Friday morning. It was more than 400 miles northeast of the Leeward Islands, moving northwest and staying clear of the Caribbean.
