North American Aerospace Defense Command scrambled several aircraft from Alaska on Wednesday after it detected four Russia military aircraft in international airspace near Alaska.

According to a NORAD news release, two Russian Tupolev Tu-95 bombers and two Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets were detected in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). In response, four F-16s and four KC-135 air tankers, along with a E-3 Sentry early warning plane were deployed to intercept and monitor the Russian planes.

“The Russian military aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace,” NORAD stated in its release. “This Russian activity in the Alaskan ADIZ occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat.”
