Nostalgia is a powerful thing.

That was evident Friday morning as fans of the sandwich known as the "Kmart sub" lined up at Garden City's Villa Bakery at 6237 Middlebelt to get a resurrected version of the thrifty classic.

Once a retail giant, now-shuttered Kmart stores were known for many things: bargains, layaway, Blue Light specials and an in-store cafe where guests could fuel up on concessions like hot dogs, popcorn, frozen soft drinks and lunchmeat submarine sandwiches.

The subs had bologna, ham, salami, American cheese, shredded lettuce, tomato, white onion and mustard. Some say they also had pickles and banana peppers, which is up for debate. What isn't debatable is that they were sold encased in plastic wrap.
