State Sen. Royce Duplessis on Friday secured the endorsement of U.S. Rep. Cleo Fields, D-Baton Rouge, in the race for New Orleans mayor .

Fields, who last year won a seat representing Louisiana's 6th Congressional District, is the highest-profile backer Duplessis has secured to date in the mayoral contest.

Early voting in New Orleans' municipal races begins on Saturday.
