It is no secret that the relationship between the city of Emporia and Lyon County has recently been more contentious than usual. At the City Commission’s budget hearing on Sep. 17, commissioners told the public they had ideas on how to lower property taxes, but said they were waiting on the county and school district to sit down and have a dialogue with them.
This comes several months after a breakdown in conversation regarding a joint task force between the city and county, alongside USD 253, to work toward solutions to reduce mill levies and alleviate the property tax burden on citizens.
