Nioka, an Indigenous word meaning “green hill”, is indeed surrounded by verdant green hills and bushland. Named by the original owner, photographer Kraig Carlstrom, this extraordinary house bordering Gore Greek Reserve in Sydney’s inner-northern suburb of Northwood must have created enormous interest when it was completed in 1975.

Designed by the late architect Furio Valich, from Gordon & Valich Architects, the four-level home has been sensitively restored by A Studio Architecture for an artistic couple.
