DES MOINES, Iowa (KWQC) - The superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools has been detained by ICE, according to the district school board.

The school board president, Jackie Norris, posted a message Friday afternoon saying Ian Roberts, 51, was detained that morning.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety said around 8:45 a.m. they received a mutual aid request to help ICE find a person who drove away during a traffic stop by agents.

In a media release, ICE officers said they approached Roberts in his vehicle during a targeted enforcement operation.

Officers said they later found Roberts’ vehicle near a wooded area.

Iowa State Patrol and special agents responded and found Roberts. He is currently in custody of immigration authorities.
