SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) - One year ago, Hurricane Helene devastated the Upstate and western North Carolina, leaving communities in turmoil. And as many evacuated with no choice but to leave their pets behind, animal shelters across our area stepped up to help.

A once in a lifetime storm brought strong winds, tore down trees and displaced hundreds of people in the Upstate and western North Carolina, impacting not only people but man's best friend.

“It was pretty tough there for a while. We had great community support but it was tough with having no power and having extra animals coming in," Karen Parker with Heart of the Foothills Animal Rescue in Rutherford County said.
