As much as everyone dreams of B.C. Place joining other major stadiums considered outdoor venues but having major roofs — such as Frankfurt’s Deutsche Bank Park — getting a permanent grass surface is not going to happen.

It’s a practical reality, explains Chris May, the downtown stadium’s general manager.

“The challenge with grass is you can’t really cover it for more than about five to six days without it just being destroyed,” he said. Some major stadiums are able to pull out their field and grow it outside the stadium. Or they have an expensive in-stadium setup to maximize light for the grass to grow.
