MINNEAPOLIS – All Rutgers football needed was for the defense to step up.

The Scarlet Knights held a four-point fourth-quarter lead with just more than six minutes to go. Their defense, beleaguered most of this season, just needed to stop the Minnesota Golden Gophers and get the offense the ball back.

It couldn’t do it. Not even close.

Minnesota marched right down the field. Quarterback Drake Lindsey threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Javon Tracy, who stretched out his arm while falling to the ground to just get the ball over the goal line.

Instead of an encouraging road victory, Rutgers suffered a disappointing 31-28 loss at Huntington Bank Stadium that raised even more questions about its defense.
