A nine-year-old boy was hospitalized on Saturday after sustaining a gunshot wound to his leg while he slept, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities said deputies responded to a call of a shooting at 3:16 a.m. at an apartment unit in the 1200 block of Graves Avenue in unincorporated El Cajon. They found the boy had been hit by a bullet after it pierced through the window.

The nine-year-old was transported to a hospital and was in stable condition. Authorities said he was expected to be released Saturday evening.

Deputies searched the area and found no other resident was injured, according to a press release. The Lakeside Sheriff's Substation initiated an investigation. No suspects have been identified.
