NORMAN — In the late 1970s, Tony Casillas would walk by the trophy case at East Central High School in his hometown of Tulsa. He daily saw the retired jersey of Jimbo Elrod, who had gone on to be an all-American defensive end at OU.

“Every time I walked by, I said, ‘One day, that’s going to be me,’” Casillas said. “Jimbo really motivated me to want to go to Oklahoma.”

Casillas wasn’t the only one. A generation of Oklahomans were drawn to the Barry Switzer Sooners.

And 40 years ago, Switzer’s 1985 Sooners won the final of his three national championships. His roster was loaded with Oklahomans, and many of them were from Tulsa County.
