COLUMBIA, S.C. — All eyes are on the tropics as state leaders continue to monitor what could soon become Tropical Storm Imelda.

Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency and held a press conference Saturday afternoon to share how the state is preparing.

Meanwhile, some Richland County residents said they are already making plans in case severe weather hits.

“There’s really no safe haven when it comes to nature; you just got to deal with it and hope everything works out at the end of the day,” Johnny Harper, a Columbia resident, said.

Some residents who live near the Congaree River said they are bracing for the worst.

“Normal preparations, milk, bread, your staples, and basically I just keep an eye on the river real good and watch the news and keep up with it," William Terry sa
