A man hanging his head out of a second-story window to get away from billowing smoke was rescued from a burning West Hamilton home by firefighters on Sunday afternoon.
Flames were visible on the second floor of 136 Homewood Ave. as neighbours tried to find a way to reach the man.
“Everyone was yelling,” said a neighbour who lives directly across the street and gave his name only as John. “No one had a ladder tall enough.”
He said firefighters arrived within five to 10 minutes and rescued the man who was the only one home when the fire broke out just before 2:14 p.m.
Smoke was first noticed by neighbours who were sitting out in their backyard a few houses down on Homewood Avenue, between Locke Street South and Dundurn Street South.
