Acting NSW Police Commissioner Peter Thurtell has acknowledged the “enduring toll” borne by the family and colleagues of slain police officers on Monday, at a ceremony that etched eight further officers onto the hallowed wall of remembrance.

Addressing a gathering attended by Premier Chris Minns and incoming police commissioner Mal Lanyon, who will begin his five-year term as state’s top cop on Wednesday, Thurtell said the 284 slain officers immortalised on the remembrance wall were an everlasting reminder of the sacrifice made to uphold public order and safety.

“Each one [is] a story of commitment, bravery, and selflessness,” Thurtell told attendees at the remembrance service in The Domain.
