A Gastonia man pleaded guilty in the death of his girlfriend, who was killed when the couple wrecked while street racing earlier this year.

Raterrio Sheppard, 39, was convicted Sept. 17 in the death of 36-year-old Porscha Mason.

Sheppard was driving a burgundy Dodge Charger at around 8 p.m. Friday, March 28, in the 1500 block of Hoffman Road. He appears to have been racing Mason, who was driving a white Dodge Challenger, according to Assistant District Attorney Chad Smith. A video obtained by police showed them taking off from a stop light at a high rate of speed, with Sheppard behind Mason, Smith said. Mason was found to have been driving 100 mph, Smith said.
