Indigenous communities across Minnesota and Wisconsin are mourning the loss of Ernest L. “Ernie” Stevens Jr., longtime chair of the Indian Gaming Association, who also was a staunch advocate of tribal sovereignty.
Stevens died suddenly on Friday at the age of 66. He was a citizen and former councilman of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin.
His family issued this statement late Friday: "It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Dad and Papa, Ernie Stevens Jr. We ask for privacy at this time as our family navigates this profound loss. More information and announcements will be shared in the coming days. Thank you for your prayers and support."
He is survived by wife Cheryl and their five children – Brandon, Ernest III, Margaret, Maria and Lois – as well as 20 grandchildren,
