Labour have set out new rules that could stop migrants staying in the UK if they claim benefits or don't learn English. Home secretary Shabana Mahmood told the Labour Party conference about the plans on Monday (September 29).

During her keynote speech at the conference in Liverpool, she vowed to create a fairer immigration system. The MP, who is of Pakistani heritage, said she wanted to 'preserve our openness' to migrants like her hard working parents.

However, she argued that, to do this, the government must crack down on illegal working and set rules that make 'contribution' a condition of living here. Ms Mahmood said that this could include volunteering to a 'local cause'.
