STURGEON LAKE, Minn. — A vulnerable child is safe with his family after he wandered away from a campsite in east central Minnesota over the weekend.

The Pine County Sheriff's Department says 911 dispatchers were notified after the boy, who is nonverbal and on the autism spectrum, left the campsite in a rural area of Sturgeon Bay Friday afternoon. Responding deputies learned the child was enrolled in Project Lifesaver, which involves placing a transmitter on vulnerable adults and children who have a tendency to wander and put themselves in danger.

While first responders carried out a search with drones, UTVs and other equipment, deputies equipped with Project Lifesaver equipment arrived on scene and used it to find the boy just over an hour after the 911 call came in. He was uninjured and
