One of three beached sperm whales in P.E.I. dead; condition of another unknown

A marine rescue organization says one of three beached sperm whales off the coast of northern Prince Edward Island has died.

Tonya Wimmer, executive director of Marine Animal Response Society, says her organization got a call about the stranded animals on Saturday evening.

She says the first whale was dead soon after.

She adds that a second one was still breathing while her team did not know the condition of the third whale.

Wimmer made the comments as she headed to the site of the stranding.

She says sperm whales are found in deep waters either on the continental shelf or even in the Gulf of St Lawrence, and she was concerned they were so far away from their natural habitat.

She says subadult sperm whales usually measure between 10 and 15 metres, and weigh around 30 tons.
