KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - A Knoxville man has been charged with voluntary manslaughter after he beat a man to death over money he said he was owed, according to a police report.

The man, 51-year-old Fernando Carerra, confronted the victim at 211 Young High Pike on Saturday morning at about 9:30 and demanded $1,000 for items that he had left at the victim’s house, according to the police report.

“A witness reported that the defendant demanded the money, before the victim responded that he would have to take it from him,” the report said.

A few minutes later, the victim, 57-year-old James Phipps, was leaving a nearby food pantry when he and Carerra squared up behind the building and the two began punching each other, according to the police report.
