WASHINGTON — The Simpsons are headed back to the big screen for the first time in 20 years.

Disney and 20th Century Studios have announced a sequel to “The Simpsons Movie,” with a theatrical release date set for July 23, 2027.

Plot details have not been revealed, but 20th Century teased the film on Instagram with a poster showing Homer reaching for a sprinkle-covered pink donut shaped like the number two.

“Homer’s coming back for seconds,” the tagline says.

The original “Simpsons Movie,” directed by longtime series veteran David Silverman, debuted in July 2007 and earned $536 million at the global box office against a $75 million budget. The story followed Homer after he pollutes Springfield’s lake, leading the Environmental Protection Agency to trap the town under a massive glass dome
