The state Civil Service Commission has ordered that a former Cumberland County municipal police chief be reinstated after finding his demotion and suspension was unjustified.

It is the second time the commission has ordered that Rudy Beu be returned to the post of Vineland police chief after the city filed disciplinary charges against him.

But Beu won’t be returning to work because the city is pursuing a third disciplinary case against him, local officials said.

Beu’s attorney, Colin Bell, accused the city of wasting taxpayer dollars on a five-year smear campaign of baseless allegations against the police chief. The accusations include that Beu offered a police officer a promotion in return for sex with a cop’s wife or daughter.
