From Sunglow Pier down to Ponce Inlet, crews in Volusia County have been working nonstop to rebuild sand dunes and strengthen the coastline ahead of Tropical Storm Imelda's expected impact.

Just weeks ago, Hurricane Erin tore through the same stretch of beach, carving what locals described as “cliff-like” drop-offs in some areas.

“It just really stinks that they just did the whole replenishment,” said Michael Luttrell, general manager at Crabby Joe’s. “It’s all just, like, gone again.”

Now, with Imelda churning offshore in the Atlantic, residents worry the storm could wipe away even more sand before the season ends.

“We still got another month and a half,” said Volusia County resident Steve Brown. “We’ll be lucky to have a little bit [of sand] left.”
