A 30-year-old Portland man bought more than three dozen guns for others, many of them traced to crimes in three states including two fatal shootings, investigators said.
A federal judge on Monday sentenced Richard J. Hilts Jr. to a year and a day in prison.
Hilts bought 41 guns from 11 licensed dealers from Aug. 29, 2017, to March 19, 2022, according to court records.
Investigators with the U.S Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives linked 16 of the guns to two separate homicides and 15 attempted homicides in Oregon, Washington and California, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Sax.
Many of the guns wound up in the hands of Bloods street gang members, Sax said.
Hilts was arrested in August 2022. He pleaded guilty in April to one count of making a false state
