CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Covington city officials met with residents Monday to discuss the community’s housing shortage.

Mayor Ron Washington said the city needs an estimated 900 new housing units by 2028.

Many areas in Covington are short on housing, especially south of 12th Street.

“Hard-working people, taxpayers, are finding it hard to find a place to live,” the mayor said.

“Here in the City of Covington, we have some 200 vacant properties and abandoned buildings. Our goal is to take that property and turn it into developers and non-profits to allow our community to reside in those homes. Currently, our taxpayers are taking care of those homes.”

In the last eight years, the average home sale price in Covington increased by 122% while the average rent increased by more than $350.
