BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - On this day in history, a convicted killer walked free after a first-of-its-kind ruling by the Vermont Supreme Court.
Rebecca Durenleau was released from prison on September 30, 1994, 2 years after a jury found her guilty of orchestrating her husband’s murder.
On appeal, the Supreme Court found that there was not enough evidence for the jury to find her guilty.
Not only did the justices throw out the conviction, but they declared her innocent, meaning she could never be tried again.
