LANSING — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and lawmakers from both parties were taking it right to the wire on finalizing a 2026 budget deal as talks continued all day Monday, Sept. 29 and were expected to continue into Tuesday, Sept. 30, the last day of the 2025 fiscal year.
If the House and Senate don't approve identical versions of a 2026 budget by midnight on Sept. 30, a partial state government shutdown will result. Potentially, it will be the first time in Michigan history that both the state and federal governments will be shut down, as talks continued in Washington, D.C .
